Fall is great time to plant most trees and many shrubs. Be sure to keep an eye on them this winter if we go into a winter drought and water newly planted landscape plants deeply once a week if no rain! We do not recommend planting broad-leaf evergreens like hollies of evergreen magnolias in fall since our winters are very desiccating to their leaves and they can suffer winter damage if not well rooted.

It’s Dutch bulb time! Plant now for spring beauty! Daffodils can be planted in October but wait til late month or early November to plant tulips. Tulips can still be successfully planted through the middle of November. Plant bulbs approximately 3 times as deep as their size and space on about 6-inch centers.

Native annual and perennial wildflower seeds do very well when seeded in the fall. See the fact sheet 6464 “Wildflower Gardening in Oklahoma” for information on preparing your area for planting. You can also plant native and many other hardy perennial plants in fall very successfully!
